Sunday Afternoon at Grand Army Plaza: Richard Grayson's "I Survived Caracas Traffic" at the Brooklyn Public Library's Central Library

Spending our Sunday off in Crown Heights, a neighborhood we love spending October in, we went to the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza on a sunny, mild afternoon to return a copy of Lysistrata and pick up a copy of John Ciardi's translation of Dante's Inferno -- both cheap Signet paperbacks we use in our class at the fabulous School of Visual Arts -- and to our surprise, we found one of our books, the hardover 1996 edition of I Survived Caracas Traffic in the stacks, so we decided to take the poor short story collection out for a much-needed airing.

That's My Congress, a politically independent journal of the campaigns and legislation of the United States Congress, covers our candidacy for Congress in Arizona's Fourth Congressional District:
Running against conservative Republican incumbent Paul Gosar in Arizona’s 4th Congressional District, Americans Elect party candidate Richard Grayson reacts to the absurdity of modern politics with absurdist rhetoric:
Q: What effects have the Citizens United ruling had on this year’s election process so far? Do you see them as positive or negative, and why?
Grayson: It’s hard to say; I need to watch more campaign ads. I favor a Constitutional amendment to reverse the ruling so we don’t have unlimited anonymous donors. I never spent a dime on my campaigns. They should be publicly financed. I want votes only from the one percent – not the richest, the elite. I also demand that if people want to vote for me, they must read five books. See the list on my website at americans-elect-grayson.blogspot.com.

Election Results in Arizona's Fourth Congressional District: Americans Elect Party Candidate Richard Grayson Finishes Fourth with 0.98% of the Vote

We finished last in our race to be the congressman in Arizona's Fourth Congressional District as the candidate of the Americans Elect party, one of Arizona's five recognized political parties entitled to ballot access. At last count, we had almost 2,400 votes, giving us 0.98% of the vote.
Here is the story as reported by Phoenix TV station KPHO (CBS5):
Rep. Paul Gosar wins Arizona's 4th Congressional District
By Phil Benson
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Incumbent Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Prescott has won the U.S. House seat in Arizona's 4th Congressional District.
While the 4th District seat technically had no incumbent, Gosar switched to run in Arizona's 4th District rather than the neighboring 1st District to improve the odds of capturing a second term in Congress. It worked. The 4th District has a large number of conservative voters. Gosar said he sought re-election "because we need to get back to the basics of a limited government, the Rule of Law and a government that encourages job creation, not stifles it with red tape."
He said on his campaign website he is against amnesty for illegal immigrants. He supports Arizona's law cracking down on illegal immigrants. Gosar said a second term would allow him to work harder to trim bureaucracy so that small businesses can grow, and he said he wants to slash taxes.
Democratic political newcomer Johnnie Robinson of Florence faced an uphill battle against Gosar.  Robinson said on his campaign website that he supported an education system with standardized curriculum and programs that address learning curves in local school districts. Robinson also wanted to ensure that members of the military can access medical, housing and financial services as well as obtain good jobs.
Other candidates in the race included Libertarian candidate Joe Pamelia, a businessman, aeronautical engineer and Vietnam War veteran, and Americans Elect candidate Richard Grayson, a humorist, author and gay rights activist.
District 4 encompasses seven counties and includes most of western Arizona, most of Yavapai County and northern Pinal County. It covers Prescott, part of Yuma and Florence.

Just a few blocks from our current home in Bay Ridge, very early this morning, the amazing volunteers from Occupy Sandy, which has done such wonderful work during the last few weeks since the hurricane, were busy preparing what seemed like zillions of Thanksgiving dinners for people in hard-hit areas. The kitchen began prep work at 8 a.m. yesterday, was open all night, and volunteers were here even at 2 a.m. We're really grateful for Occupy Sandy on this Thanksgiving.

The front page of The Wall Street Journal today, Friday, November 23, 2012, features an above the fold photo of yesterday's wonderful Occupy Sandy Thanksgiving dinner outside St. Camillus in Rockaway with the headline: "A Sunny Thanksgiving Feast for Storm's Victims." At least one person pictured was a volunteer taking a break to eat a delicious apple muffin. We're a little embarrassed (but not that much) to be pictured when so many of our fellow volunteers and the regular crew at Occupy Sandy in Rockaway aren't. But we are proud of being a tiny part of such a good effort. And we also like that at the extreme left of the photo you can just make out the Dayton Towers West building at 102-00 Shore Front Parkway. For thirty years our beloved Aunt Tillie -- our grandfather's sister -- and Uncle Morris Metz, had an apartment there on the second floor, where we spent several holiday dinners (Thanksgiving, Rosh Hashona) with them and our Grandma Ethel back in the 1980s. That was the last time we were featured on the front page, albeit of the second section, of The Wall Street Journal. A story by Brooks Jackson about our presidential campaign was published on November 28, 1983, just about 29 years ago.It ran with the headline "This Presidential Candidate Wants Jane Wyman as His Running Mate," It ended:
So what's next for Mr. Grayson?
He's running for President as a Democratic candidate and accepting public financing, sort of.
"When I go down to the unemployment office, I have to prove that I'm looking for work," he says. "I figure that the presidency is a good job."
He would like Jane Wyman to be his running mate. "She has experience dumping Reagan," he says. The president's ex-wife hasn't accepted yet."

Monday Afternoon in Bay Ridge: A Walk Along the Water

To contact us Click HERE
This afternoon, needing to clear our head, we took a walk along the water just a few blocks from where we've been staying in Bay Ridge: first along Shore Road and then over the Belt Parkway around and under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. It was a lovely walk, reminding us how we've loved this place forever. As we headed home, on 99th Street between Fourth and Third Avenues, we were startled to see two brick mid-century homes next to each other, each of which had a stained-glass panel with a vent that featured a sailboat, the same kind in our small bedroom in the house on East 56th Street where we grew up.We were grateful to be reminded of this sailboat. We used to look out of the window a lot as a kid and think about the little sailboat.

Tuesday Afternoon in Tribeca: Looking Out at One World Trade Center from the Ninth Floor of Fiterman Hall

To contact us Click HERE
This semester the new Fiterman Hall at Borough of Manhattan Community College opened -- the old Fiterman Hall building was so heavily damaged from the collapse of 7 World Trade Center on 9/11 that it had to be demolished -- and we've been teaching our wonderful creative writing workshop there on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. On the Barclay Street side of the building on the ninth floor, they have some comfortable swivel chairs placed at the floor-to-ceiling windows, and on this very chilly, rainy/snowy afternoon before class, we watched the still-not-complete One World Trade Center and all the construction by the PATH terminal (just opened again after the hurricane) below.

Regulations Would Eliminate 'Too Much Parking' in Downtown Brooklyn

Today a City Council panel will be considering new zoning regulations that would eliminate parking spaces in Downtown Brooklyn.

It seems that many residents of Downtown Brooklyn don't own cars and spaces in residential developments are going empty.

The New York Times reports the new.regulations would allow developers who already have built excess parking to convert the unneeded space to other uses.

BP Marty Markowitz thinks some of those spaces should be converted into bicycle parking -- not a bad idea, but one the Council will not consider.

Unemployed New Yorkers: Apply for Sandy Cleanup Jobs! The Brooklyn Headhunter

Gov. Cuomo visits Rockaway Sunday with Congressman Meeks & NYS Sen. Smith
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday that the state has secured a $27 million federal grant that will hire more than 5,000 unemployed New Yorkers to work helping clean-up communities still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

The funding will be provided to communities to quickly hire young people and the unemployed to help with clean-up efforts.

“The enormous amount of work to be done gives us a chance to provide young and unemployed New Yorkers with job opportunities cleaning up their communities,” Governor Cuomo said.

People who are interested in applying for a job  are encouraged to contact the Department of Labor at 1-888-4-NYSDOL (1-888-469-7365) or by visiting www.labor.ny.gov/sandyjobs.

All individuals must be unemployed to be eligible. Once hired, workers will earn approximately $15 per hour to work on short and long-term projects. The work will include cleaning and repairing damaged public structures and property in each of the nine counties declared disaster areas.

In addition, Governor Cuomo said that the state has partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to launch a local hire program to replace FEMA employees, often from out of state, with New Yorkers. The goal is to hire upwards of 700 New Yorkers.

Individuals interested in applying for a job with FEMA should visit Governor Cuomo’s Jobs Express website at http://www.labor.ny.gov/jobs/regional.shtm

The full-time, temporary positions range from Community Relations Specialists providing outreach to the disaster-stricken communities, to administrative assistants.

Brooklynite Held in Bolivian Jail May Have Been Fleeced

Jacob Ostreicher by Judae1
Here's a cautionary tale: Brooklyn resident Jacob Ostreicher has been imprisoned in Bolivia for 18 months without any charges being filed. He was arrested in a money-laundering investigation but no evidence has been presented.

While in jail, he claims that corrupt officials have fleeced him, seizing 18,000 metric tons of rice from his farming venture, selling most of it, and pocketing the cash, according to the Timesleader.

According to Wikipedia, Ostreicher and Geneva lawyer Andre Zolty, along with others, invested at least $25 million in the rice farming project in 2008.

Jose Manuel Antezana, an official in the Presidential Ministry, was arrested Monday and accused of receiving $9,900 in proceeds from the sale of Ostreicher's rice in a personal bank account -- and Ostreicher says he was told that more arrests were coming.

But he's still in jail.

love's such a delicate thing that we do

We spent the long holiday weekend in Arkansas with our families, mostly to celebrate baby brother David's graduation. All five siblings graduated from Little Rock Christian (or Walnut Valley), and with David being the last (I'm not going to say empty nest, but), it just seemed best that we would all be there (NB: I went to every one of my sibling's graduations with the exception of John, who was VALEDICTORIAN. I'm sorry, John).

It was fun to be home with everyone and it be not Christmas. And I'm excited that we will all be home again soon.

[Unfortch, airplane travel just seems to be getting worse (almost lost luggage, stuck in Chicago overnight, 2-hour delays on plane, and of course, PAT-DOWNS!). We managed, it was just the two of us, but imagine if Desmond had been along? Or if we [in the hypothetical future] have a child? How do people do this? Please please please build me high-speed train.]

this is not the future, but I sense it's right up there

It's so boring to talk about how busy you've been, isn't it? And really, isn't everyone busy? I'm not saying busy is necessarily good (or bad), but some of this has been very good (and some of it has been a Thursday night class from 6-9pm on Human Resources). And really if you are reading this, you probably already know, but sometimes this is just for me, for remembering, for being thankful. And if you don't already know, well here are some things.

After we got back from San Francisco, my parents came to town for a few days. We went to a baseball game, and to see Newsies (on Broadway!!!), and to the 9/11 Memorial, and to the High Line.

Then, my California ladies came to town for a long weekend (Amanda is not a California lady, obvs). We ate good food and shopped and drank sparkling wine during the day.
Day Job Magazine finally arrived hot off the presses (and delivered on a Jewish holiday so almost couldn't get them off the truck) and Elliott was busy shipping it out and delivering to shops in New York. In between that, he interviewed for a job and has started doing freelance work at Pentagram (amazing).

Well, and then my brothers came to town. We ate at Tea Room and went to the MoMa and to see Newsies (again).
And of course, I've been running. The marathon is three weeks away, I met my fundraising goal (thank you!!), and we are scheduled to run 20 miles tomorrow morning.

And lastly, we've sort of been trying to find a new place to live. So, stay tuned, because I'll probably have a lot more to say about that.
